Rare 1951 Friday's Child by Royal Worcester

This is a rare early edition of this model of Friday's Child from Royal Worcester, one of many figurines modelled by Freida Doughty. The year mark is shown on the logo by the dot succeeding the W, marking production in 1951. For each subsequent year of production an additional dot was added until 1963.

The majority of these delighful figurines for sale today are much later, produced from the 1990s at Royal Worcester and outsourced from 2004 to production in Sri Lanka.

Near closure in the 1930s, Royal Worcester was saved by Worcester businessman Charles Dyson Perrins (of Lea and Perrins Worcester Sauce), bringing with him money and new modellers. One of the Directors at Royal Worcester was introduced to the work of Freda Doughty through her cousin. Freda modelled children on the children who played in her garden in Kent. She was an instant hit when the first of her designs were produced by Royal Worcester. She has been credited with keeping Royal Worcester afloat, such was the popularity of her work.

The first days of the week children ran off the production line in 1939. Seven new figurines were added in 1954. They were produced again in 1991 in paler colours. Many of those for sale today are from the 1990s production runs. In 2004, Sri Lanka began producing small scale cheaper versions which you will also see for sale regularly today.

Reiver Vintage is raising awareness of the work of Journey Enterprises, a small charity supporting adults with complex learning disability to lead active, inclusive and fulfilling lives. The Charity has four day centres which help people with learning disability learn life and work skills. These are in Blyth and Hexham (Northumberland), Newcastle (Tyne and Wear) and Bishop Auckland (County Durham).
